1 Background
The School of Science has issued School of Science accounts to faculty, staff, students, and related members from other departments, providing secure access to services through client certificates. However, security requirements have become increasingly stringent, and features such as multi-factor authentication are now essential. It has become difficult to meet these requirements with the current School of Science account system.
Meanwhile, UTokyo Account provides unified services across the university with strong security measures, including multi-factor authentication. Recently, UTokyo Account has also been adopted for departmental services. Therefore, the School of Science will switch its authentication system from School of Science Account to UTokyo Account.
2 Switch Date

2.1 Confirmation Page
You can confirm in advance that you can access School of Science services using your UTokyo Account by visiting the following page:
2.2 Notes
- No migration work is required for users or administrators during the switch. VPN service settings will change; please refer to the instructions below.
- If you do not usually use UTokyo WiFi, please review the UTokyo Account guide. Security training and multi-factor authentication setup are mandatory.
- Passwords and client certificates for the School of Science account will no longer be needed after the switch.
- University-wide services that already use UTokyo Account will not be affected.
3 Changes for Users
3.1 Service Access
Previously, services such as meeting document sites and classroom reservation systems required client certificate authentication. After the switch, the UTokyo Account login page will appear. If you are already authenticated via UTokyo Portal, no additional login will be required.

For VPN connections, UTokyo Account cannot be used directly. A dedicated VPN account and password will be issued. See details here:
3.2 For New Faculty, Staff, and Students
Previously, faculty accounts were requested by department administrators and distributed on paper. After the switch, users will apply via an online form, and administrators will approve access.
For students, accounts were previously created in bulk and distributed on paper. After the switch, bulk setup will allow immediate access to services.

4 Changes for Administrators
4.1 Account Registration Management
Previously, administrators submitted requests and distributed account sheets. After the switch, approvals will be processed via a dedicated management page. Current requests are accepted until January 15, 2026. Requests for non-UTokyo Account services (e.g., office terminals) remain unchanged.
